On Thursday October 6, 2011, New Orléans Afrikan Film and Arts Festival Project will once again host its annual gala at Galvez Restaurant in the Atrium Room to celebrate the 2011 recipients of the Toni Cade Bambara Award for Cultural Leadership. NOAFEST makes this annual award, named for prolific writer, artist, educator, feminist and community activist, Toni Cade Bambara (1939-1995), to artists and individuals who have contributed significantly to the city’s cultural memory, artistic diversity and richness, and sense of community. The 2010 awardees were Vera Warren-Williams and Jennifer Turner, owner and manager of the Community Book Center, which has served the New Orleans community for 27 years. The recipients in 2011 will be legendary musician, teacher and entrepreneur, Harold Battiste, Jr. whose achievements over a lifetime have advanced the musical culture of New Orleans and helped level the playing field for dozens of the City’s black musicians and performers, and Brenda Marie Osbey, whose strikingly original and lyrical voice of historical memory earned her the 1998 American Book Award and designation as Poet Laureate of the State of Louisiana in 2005.
